Resolved Question: Aquatic tiny worm-like parasite?
I have a brackish water (part fresh-, part saltwater) aquarium with 8 spotted freshwater puffer fish in it and 1 African leaf fish. They are fed only frozen bloodworms and small aquarium snails. I live in southwest Florida and use tap water that is treated for the fish. I go to Petsmart sometimes and take some of the snails invading their aquariums to feed my fish and have recently noticed this very tiny hair-like worm parasite that swims up out of the rocks in the aquarium every now and then in a squiggly motion. An employee there stated that they are aware of these "worms" and that they believe they are from a fire-belly toad aquarium but are really unsure as to what they are. I'm having a hard time getting rid of them, though they don't seem to be directly affecting my fish. I know they're probably not anchor worms, because they don't attach themselves to the fish. I can sometimes see them curl up in a ball and when they do this it's hard to keep track of them, because they end up looking like the little air bubbles floating through the water. If anyone has any idea what these are and how to get rid of them, please let me know all that I can do and what to buy. I've only tried these alka-seltzer-looking tablets that you drop in the aquarium (I forget what they are called) that are supposed to get rid of some aquarium parasites and then when that didn't work, I tried simply cleaning out the aquarium and everything in it with scorching hot water, including replacing the filter inserts and everything. I just don't want to use anything dangerous for my puffers. Please help!
Resolved Question: don't you feel sorry for goldfish?
everyone buys them as a first fish and is under the delusion that they can be kept in tiny aquariums. and then by the time they get a bigger aquarium they've moved on to freshwater or saltwater aquariums so goldfish are like doomed to be treated badly. except for the lucky few or the ones that are put into ponds. anyways i have a 55 gallon tank and i've had freshwater but i've moved on to considering saltwater, but now i;ve decided to wait and just get goldfish. so how many comet can i put in there, or if i decide to get fancy goldfish how many should i put, its either one or the other. and im having them go up to their adult size. i don't want to give any away so yeah. don't you feel glad for this goldfish or goldfishes that are lucky, which store should i rescue them from? also im going to take pictures every week and document its growth and prove to all the people who think they can keep them in tiny aquarium can't :) thanks for the help
Resolved Question: Which of my fish would suffer from adding salt to my freshwater aquarium?
I foolishly bought a colombian shark, not knowing that they needed salt. i put it in my freshwater tank, and now im worried that he might die, if i dont add salt. Hes about 3+ inches right now. What should i do? Would these fish suffer from adding salt:Barbs, loaches, tetras, bala shark albino rainbow shark, corydoras, angelfish, plecos(normal, and rubberlipped) chinese algae eater, gouramis, female betta, etc. If something didnt work i can move it to another tank, but i would like to know which fish would be ok. I have a 100 gallon tank. How much salt, and what kind do i need to put in. And how often? Resolved Question: What kind of freshwater aquarium fish are these?
1. They are solid black, fairly active, about 1-2", swim kinda funny, and came from Walmart. 2. Orange and Black (Mostly Orange), active, 1-2", also came from Walmart. They were in the same tank at Walmart if that helps. I know this is a fairly stupid question but if you have any idea, I'd like to know. This is why you never buy fish from Walmart. The black ones are mollies like this http://www.freshwaterhobbyist.com/infopages/images/blackmolly.jpg the orange ones look like them but are orange.
Voting Question: BIG problems with my fish tank and possible FISH TB?
I apologize in advance for the length of my questions I always try and make sure i tell yahoo all the information I can so that is why. I recently asked a question about a serious disease problem in my freshwater aquarium. Link to question below: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As4AFMs1CpMwRbkuqvhWxLMjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20100302111948AAyVVTH Anyway, I have since realised that the mystery illness links in to nearly all the properties of FISH TB. I really think it is fish tb. Everything seems to link in, its the only disease that makes sense with what i am experiencing. I know everything i have looked at so far has pretty much said that FISH TB is incurable. My last two fish aren't looking good and i am guessing they will die soon. I therefore have several questions as to how I should deal with this - what appears to be a - infestation, after they are dead. Ok, so once my fish have died and my tank is empty, what do i need to do so that i can get it up and running again? The information i have says that from now onward in order to use the tank again i have to basically start over, as if i have just bought a new tank and i need to set it up. i am more than willing to do that but i need a better 'description' as to how to start over. I myself and my dad have a very very bad immune system because of on going illnesses so how to i clear my tank out and be as little involved as possible - because humans can catch fish tb and i am extremely susceptible to illnesses. My questions are - do i have to throw out everything in my tank? e.g. plants, stones, wood and my substrate? Or is there something i can do to them to make them completely tb free and re-usable? and - will i have to get a brand new filter and heater to be on the safe side? or is there a sure far way to make them safe and completely free of fish tb? Another thing - i am presuming that i will need to get rid of my gravel substrate. To be honest i will probably change it anyway. But has anyone got any tips on how to remove the gravel with minimum use of my hands as possible? SORRY I JUST NEED TO BE REALLY CAUTIOUS BECAUSE OF MY IMMUNE SYSTEM! any help would be appreciated. Thank you! Xx
Resolved Question: Beginner Freshwater tank questions?
I know i already posted about this pre- fish, but know i have some more 'specific' questions. my fishtank is a 20 gallon tank and is kept at 76 degrees F. I just got 3 fish today, 2 kissing gourminies... i think there called im not sure and i got another fish but i dont even want to TRY to spell his name. ( i have already let them float now they are in the aquarium) anyway, Do i have to wait to feed them? they have been in there for about 2 or 3 hours and i asked my sister if i could feed them after we tested the tank but she said "no, let them get used to the tank!" and how often should i check Ph/Nitrite/Ammonia? how often do i feed them starting tomorrow? i dont have but 1 decoration in the tank and i was told that the unknown brand fish likes to hide, will he be okay until we get some more money to buy him some? why are they staying only near the 'intake' part of the filter? all three of them just sulk around every time i check on them? any other tips would be nice too thanks and sorry i wrote so much :)
Resolved Question: Need Advice on Ick, Please Help?
I have a 46 Gallon Freshwater Fish Tank with: 5 Silver Dollars 2 Black Skirt Tetras 2 Zebra Danios 1 Black Phantom Tetra 1 Cory 1 Pleco I run it with: Under-gravel Filter W/ Powerhead & the Tank’s Original Whisper Filter System I’ve had this tank ten years and have never had to treat for illness, so I have absolutely no clue here. I just added the Pleco a week ago, and although he seems very healthy, my smallest Silver Dollar’s Fins started looking beat up. The next day even more of the fins were eaten up, and then I noticed the tiny white dots on them. I talked the person who I get my fish from, and was told he was probably being picked on and may have a touch of Ick. He said to up my temperature to 82 and add a handful of aquarium salt just in case. Then yesterday it showed up on all my Silver Dollars. (I have 3 young ones, and 2 full grown). When I told the guy it was spreading to my other fish, he instructed me to add 1 Rounded Tablespoon of Aquarium Salt/ per 5 gallons and to up the temperature to 84 degrees. He said to wait 48 hours and if it doesn’t get better, we may have to isolate the silvers and treat them with meds. It’s been almost 24 hours since I followed that advice, and it only seems to be getting worse. My Silver’s are still the only ones visibly affected but it has spread to smaller three’s bodies and their fins just look awful. My larger two (which I’ve had 6 years) only have it on their fins but they seem the most stressed out of all. I really don’t want to wait another 24 hours to add medication if they NEED it now. What should I do? Wait or treat them now? If so, which meds do I buy? (something safe for all my fish) Also, does it make any sense to isolate them, shouldn’t the entire tank be treated? (Just wanted to add that the tank's levels are all in healthy ranges and ALL of my fish are still eating great. My Cory does seem quite agitated since adding the salt though.) I haven't added any meds yet, just the salt. After posting this question, I went and bought Coppersafe (by Mardel) and gave a full dose to the entire tank. By morning there was no change, but I was happy it hadn't gotten any worse at least. The insert in Coppersafe recommends using an antibiotic alongside, and Mardel products say they can be used together so I chose Maracyn and Maracyn Two. I added both last night. I was expecting it to take weeks, but this morning my fish looked great! So far I haven't lost even one fish. Only two have visible spots now, and those two still look so much better then even yesterday. I lowered the temp back down to 80, and added extra air stones because high temps and meds are said to lower the oxygen. I was dreading waiting weeks to see if they would improve (I wish I could post pics of how bad they were) but I couldn't be any happier with the results so far.
