When it comes to saltwater aquariums, a larger (or multiple) protein skimmer equals better water quality and also allows you to successfully keep more fish in the tank (while still being sensible about it). Can this also apply to freshwater and filteration? Would having multiple canister filters increase water quality? For example a 50 gallon tank with one 40 gal canister and one 30 gal canister. Would having one canister filter which is much larger than needed be beneficial or do more harm than good? I have a tank with a canister filter which is barely big enough to support the tank's size (due to silly decision and pet shop advice a long time ago). I would like to upgrade it to something more suitable. Could I get a second similar canister filter and have two running or should I get one large one and replace the one I have? If so what is the best way to transfer the sponges, etc to the new one? Thanks! :) (so in summary I'm asking two questions - if lots of filteration is beneficial and how to upgrade my system)

I am planning on starting my first own salt aquarium very soon, I've had experience with ponds and freshwater aquariums for 10 years so I think it is time to start my saltwater tank. What I want my tank to have is, 2 Longfin Bannerfish 2 Yellowtail Damselfish 1 Ocellaris Clownfish 1 Auriga or Racoon Butterflyfish 1 Bicolor Pseudochromis 1 Purple Stripe Pseudochromis So the question is, is a 50 gallon tank enough? or should I go for a bigger tank? But I wanna keep it to a 50 gal. max. So how many fishes would i have to take out to keep it at 50 gals and not have to buy a bigger tank?

This is everything it came with....I think I got a steal. She had it set up for saltwater and then converted it to freshwater. I have a ton of stuff that I don't know how to use! I haven't been successful in getting the python to work either. I can hook it to my spicket (outside) but not my sink but I can't hook the tubing to the sink/spicket attachment. It has a male end on attachment but It is to big and will not thread. Help with that would be great as well. I am getting discouraged. I tried to attach pics but it won't let me. You can look at it on craigslist under SC, then Upstate, the type in fishtank, it is the one that is for 200 and says clemson/anderson for location. The water is very murky looking and maybe that is what the film is. So I am guessing bacteria, fungal, or algae. I have a 30 gal tank that Ive had for about 2 yrs, plus Ive had it set up with other fish in the past, and Id consider myself fairly fish knowledgeable, but I have never had anything like this happen before. within the last 7-10 days I have lost about 10 fish, most of them have died in the last 5 days. I only have 8 fish left. I have had guppies, tetras (cardinal & neon) & a blue paradise dwarf gourami. the temp is set at a consistent 73 degrees, I have an ammonia and pH monitor visible inside the tank, plus I tested with my API kits for pH, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites, and everything was 100% normal. the only thing that is different, is after my last water change, I bought some new fish. a goldfish, an oto, a couple guppies, and some rummynose tetras. probably too many fish to add at once & overall the tank would be considered overstocked, but I tend to do that and make up for it with more frequent water changes. I have managed my tanks this way for years and never had any probs, plus I dont think this would cause the rapid deaths I am having. the rummynose were the first to start dying. lost 2 of the 3 about 5 days after I bought them, a couple days apart. then within the last week or so I have lost 5 of my cardinal/neon tetras, my hardy as hell gourami died yesterday, now today my goldfish is acting just like the gourami did before he croaked yesterday, and 2 or 3 guppies have died. I have 2 live plants in the tank that are thriving, I use aquarium salt and tap water purifier everytime I change my water, I have a heater of appropriate wattage that keeps the temp perfect, I have a power filter that I keep clean and just changed yesterday after doing another water change. and I have a power head to pump oxygen into the tank as well. the only thing I can think of is that the new fish brought some disease, OR the bucket I used to fill with water to put in the tank had some residue of soap or chemical in it (though I dont remember using it for cleaning, as these are my fish-specific buckets). I did about a 50-60% water change yesterday (with a known CLEAN bucket) when I really realized how many fish have died so quickly, and that my gourami was feeling sick, but it doesnt appear to have helped as the gourami died last night, as well as another guppy, and my goldfish that appeared normal yesterday is now having difficulty swimming and staying balanced. I see no sign of fungus or parasites. I did treat with copper safe for a potential worm I saw about 2 months ago. I have no idea what the heck to do/think here. even if I lose all my fish and buy more, I fear any new ones will die as well unless I figure out what the heck is in my tank. any thoughts/advice or referrals to a good book/website is appreciated!!! yes, duh, I know its not recommended to mix goldfish and tropical. the tropical fish I have all prefer/tolerate cooler temps, and Ive had goldfish historically and they are extremely hardy and forgiving fish. I highly doubt the fact that it is a goldfish is causing all my fish to die at the same time. annoyed I cant reply to your answers....... thank you OMC, great info, this is what I was looking for.

I used to have fish this summer... (just a couple of lingering goldfish that were food for the turtle I used to have but never got eaten living in my old 50 gal. aquarium). Anyways my family recently got a bird and taking care of it and my dog was too much for me too handle so I put the goldfish in my pond. Now i realize I miss the soothing sound of the tank and the connection with my dad under the grounds of a common hobby. My dad is a HUGE saltwater reef aquarium guru but i prefer freshwater fish. I want to get some fish again but I need help choosing which type. Here is what I'm looking for: Something that requires very little space (I HATED the high maintenance of a big tank). Something relatively easy to take care of (this isn't too important, I have my dad too help after all). Something different. I want a fish that looks really cool. Not pretty, cool. You know, a fish that I can sit by at night when I can't sleep and just watch it swim back and forth (and actually enjoy doing it, that is). And, once again, it has to be freshwater. The Fish doesn't have to meet these requirements exactly, but as close as possible would be great! Thank you so so so so much!! By the way, i forgot one important requirement. I want a fish that does well on its own. No schooling fish. Once again, I want to keep a SINGLE FISH. K. Thanks. Also, invertebrates are not completely out of the question. And to start with, I want to tell you what is in each of our tanks and what we are adding to them soon ... 10 Gallon: 4 Female Zebra Danios 1 Albino Corydoras Catfish + 3 Male Zebra Danios 20 Gallon: 1 Male Silver Dollar (Going to a new home before we get any more fish) 1 Black Skirt Tetra 1 Common Corydoras Catfish 1 Bristlenose Plecostomus 1 Spotted Raphael + 2 Common Corydoras Catfish + 2 Black Skirt Tetras + 6 Neon Tetras -or- Cardinal Tetras + 2 Mickey Mouse Platys Now ... Here are my questions ... 1. If I breed my Zebra Danios - Most of the fry will go to the Pet Store or be fish food, and I will keep 10 - 15. My friend will probably take 2 or 3 and he rest I will put in the 10 and 20 gallons. Will that be okay??? 2. What is the survival rate of Danio fry in a 0.5 Gallon (Plastic) Betta Tank, which is floating in a 10 gallon. Wih the following water conditions... We had a 100 gal. given to us about 5 years ago. I just want to know about how much it wil cost to set it up. If it is too expensive ... I will forget about it, but if not ... I might think about it.
