Resolved Question: What sickness do my fish have?
Okay, so I'm having problems with my fish. I started my new fish tank about 6 weeks ago (it's a 28 gallon freshwater tank). At the moment I have 3 long finned black skirted tetras, three other type of tetras (I don't know their name- they're orange with black and white), 5 small neons, 2 sunset tequilla male guppies and 1 golden gourami. Just in the past two days another gourami and one molly died. In the past (maybe 3 weeks ago) a different molly and 2 other guppies died (I figured those were just stress deaths, since they died not long after moving into my tank).
So now I'm having problems with my fish being sick. Both of the fish that recently died were sick, but I don't know what of. They were very innactive all of the sudden, and were hiding in corners and going around my heater a lot. Also, they barely ate, and they gulped at the water all day. After three days of this they died. So now a few of my other fish are acting this way, and I don't know what sickness they have, so I don't know how to treat them.
I've had the usual water balance problems, but now I have nitrites low, ammonia low, and ph is a little high, but not by much. Each week I do a 25% water change, and I have prepared the water in advance. I also have oxygen supplied into their tank, and add aquarium salt on a regular basis.
Oh, in case it makes a difference, I have three live plants and two fake plants. I had a moss ball, but I took it out because it was getting too much algae.
Please help so I can treat my fish!
I add salt because even though it's freshwater, salt keeps fish healthy. It helps their fins stay healthy, and makes the fish more active. Also, I do make sure there is no chlorine in the new water.
Resolved Question: Should I use a powerhead in my tank?
I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank, which currently contains a few snails (which routinely appear and are removed), a plecostomus, five neon tetras, and five white skirt tetras. It's a planted aquarium as well. I read that my plecostomus should like a current, and that the current is good for giving fish exercise, and reducing algae growth (which I seem to have a fair amount of).
So, should I get a powerhead or two? What type? How strong should it be? Where's a good place to position it? Estimated Cost?
Thanks!
Resolved Question: what type of snail is best for me?
I want to buy a snail for my freshwater 10 gallon aquarium. i have 2 fairly small shibunkin goldfish.
I had an apple snail before, but i'm not sure if it was right for me, and it didn't live very long, probably due to my lack of knowledge on how to care for it well.
So here are my questions...
What type of snail should i get?
When/if i don't have algae on my tank, how will my snail be eating?
How do i better insure my snail's life?
Resolved Question: How do you clean the film off of a used 55 gallon tank? I have tried vinegar and stuff from petsmart.noresults?
This is everything it came with....I think I got a steal. She had it set up for saltwater and then converted it to freshwater. I have a ton of stuff that I don't know how to use! I haven't been successful in getting the python to work either. I can hook it to my spicket (outside) but not my sink but I can't hook the tubing to the sink/spicket attachment. It has a male end on attachment but It is to big and will not thread. Help with that would be great as well. I am getting discouraged. I tried to attach pics but it won't let me. You can look at it on craigslist under SC, then Upstate, the type in fishtank, it is the one that is for 200 and says clemson/anderson for location. The water is very murky looking and maybe that is what the film is. So I am guessing bacteria, fungal, or algae. Please help.....my husband says it is a waste of money and I should have bought a new lens for my camera. But I started this hobby with a 10 gal and I absolutely love it. It is very relaxing to lay on the couch and watch the fish.
Please only aquarium experts or ones with years of exoerience reply!!! I I know you cannot use soap products on tanks.

Resolved Question: whos eggs.?
i presume these are eggs, i have found small white egg type all over my freshwater aquarium, they are small, bright white and i have founf them in groups(but not touching like in clumps) all over the tank, attached to ornaments, bogwood and coconut shells, i have thought they could be the snails but i see them as clump egg makers, and they noramlly release eggs on glass and such, anyways my current stock of fish is....5mixed sex platies,2cloud minnows,2gold cloud minnows,2pepper corys(the suspects at the moment),2 algae eating shrimp,2zigzag snails, and some other lone fish who cant have kids since they dont have a partner.
Resolved Question: How do you convert a saltwater aquarium to a freshwater aquarium?
I recently purchased an aquarium from somebody that was using it as a saltwater aquarium. It is very dirty and has salt caked all over it. I need to clean off all the algae and salt. Do I just use water and a scrubber or is there more to it? I read somewhere to use vinegar, anyone ever heard of this? Also what is a protein scimmer? The tank came with all types of stuff that I'm not familiar with. Can I keep any of the decor that was in the tank if I rinse it off? Thanks for any advice you can give.
I already have 5 fancy tailed goldfish and 2 small catfish in my other tank that I plan on transferring into this tank. The decor is mostly rocks and fake plants. I removed all of the old gravel because I want to use the rocks that I had in my old tank.
It came with 2 filters a dual bio-wheel and the the one that uses rocks with charcoal. I was planning on keeping the filters and replacing what I can with new stuff. Or can I clean the pads and wheels as well as the casing?
Resolved Question: Re-doing my 10 Gallon Tank and Have Some Questions?
I want to redo my 10 gallon freshwater tropical tank but have a couple questions before I spend more money on it. I already have the Whisper in-tank filter by Tetra but was thinking about putting in a "bubble wall" because I think they look cool and the fish will enjoy the extra aeration. However, I'm not sure how to go about that. What exactly will I need to buy?
Also, for the fish and tank that I have what types of plants will be good/hardy for my aquarium? I believe with the bulbs I have that this would be considered low lighting. (note: I plan on trying to breed the guppies later on).
I plan on having guppies, tetras (most likely neons), chinese algae eaters, and possibly zebrafish. Any other options would be apprieciated too, although I know I cannot house too many since my tank is on the smaller side.
